This discussion paper presents findings from the first phase of the Philanthropy (Re)Design Initiative, initiated by The Saville Foundation in 2025 through an exploratory systems-level inquiry into philanthropy. The work emerged through a series of conversations with actors across the global systems community exploring the future role of philanthropy in systemic transformation.

Drawing on the Biomatrix methodology, it offers a structured view of the system as it currently operates, bringing together key challenges and emerging ideals identified through the process. The paper is intended to open a space for reflection, dialogue, and deeper engagement with how philanthropy might evolve through a coordinated intervention at the level of the system itself.
